Click Counter

A privacy-first online click counter and tally counter. Count anything with keyboard shortcuts and multiple counters. All data stays on your device.

Keyboard shortcuts: Space/↑/→ to increment, ↓/← to decrement

What is this?

A privacy-first online click counter that lets you count anything with a click or tap. Whether you're tracking attendance, counting inventory, keeping score, or tallying votes, this tool makes counting easy and accurate. All data is stored locally on your device—nothing is ever sent to a server.

Unlike physical tally counters, this digital version lets you add multiple counters, customize step values, and use keyboard shortcuts for faster counting. No account required, no data collection, no tracking—just start counting.

How to use

Using the click counter is straightforward:

  1. Click the counter: Tap or click the large number display to increment the count by one (or your custom step value).
  2. Use the buttons: Click the + button to increment or the - button to decrement. Click Reset to return to zero.
  3. Keyboard shortcuts: Press Space, ↑, or → to increment. Press ↓ or ← to decrement. Press R to reset.
  4. Add more counters: Click "Add counter" to create additional counters for tracking multiple things at once.
  5. Customize: Click the gear icon on any counter to change its name or step value.

Your counts are automatically saved in your browser. Come back anytime and your counters will be exactly where you left them.

Features

Multiple counters

Track several things simultaneously by adding multiple counters. Each counter operates independently with its own count, name, and settings. The active counter (highlighted with a border) responds to keyboard shortcuts. Click any counter to make it active.

When you have multiple counters, you'll see a total displayed at the bottom showing the combined count across all counters.

Customizable step value

By default, each click adds 1 to the count. But sometimes you need to count by different amounts—maybe you're counting items in groups of 5, or tracking something that comes in dozens. Click the settings icon to change the step value to any positive number.

Keyboard shortcuts

For rapid counting, keyboard shortcuts are faster than clicking:

  • Space, , or : Increment the active counter
  • or : Decrement the active counter
  • R: Reset the active counter to zero

These shortcuts work on whichever counter is currently active (shown with a highlighted border).

Automatic saving

Your counters and their values are automatically saved to your browser's local storage. This means:

  • Close the tab or browser—your counts are preserved
  • Come back later—everything is exactly as you left it
  • No account needed—data stays on your device
  • Works offline—no internet required after loading

To start fresh, simply reset each counter or delete them and add new ones.

Negative numbers

The counter supports negative numbers. If you need to track things that go below zero, just keep clicking the minus button or pressing the down arrow. This is useful for tracking changes, balances, or anything where direction matters.

Common use cases

Attendance tracking

Keep count of people entering a room, event, or venue. The large display makes it easy to see the current count at a glance, and keyboard shortcuts let you count quickly without looking away from the door.

Inventory counting

Count stock, supplies, or any physical items. Create multiple counters for different categories or locations. The step value feature is handy when items are grouped—set it to 6 for counting half-dozens, or 12 for full cases.

Exercise repetitions

Track reps during workouts. The large tap target works well even when you're tired, and you can count without looking at the screen. Create separate counters for different exercises in your routine.

Sports scoring

Keep score for games, matches, or competitions. With multiple counters, you can track both teams or all players. The increment/decrement buttons handle score corrections easily.

Event counting

Track occurrences of anything: bird sightings, customer inquiries, interruptions during focus time, or any event you want to quantify. The automatic saving means you can count over days or weeks.

Classroom voting

Quick show-of-hands voting or polling. Reset between questions and count votes for each option using separate counters. Results are visible on the large display.

Traffic surveys

Count vehicles, pedestrians, or any traffic passing a point. Multiple counters let you categorize by type—cars in one counter, trucks in another, bicycles in a third.

Research observations

Tally behaviors, occurrences, or events during observation sessions. The unobtrusive interface lets you count while focusing on what you're observing.

Tips for effective counting

Use keyboard shortcuts for speed

When counting rapidly—like people filing through a door or items on a conveyor belt—keyboard shortcuts are much faster than clicking. Keep one hand on the keyboard and count without looking at the screen.

Name your counters clearly

When using multiple counters, give each one a clear, descriptive name. "Team A" and "Team B" is clearer than "Counter 1" and "Counter 2". Click the settings icon to rename.

Set appropriate step values

If you're counting grouped items, set the step value to match. Counting eggs by the dozen? Set step to 12. Counting nickel deposits? Set step to 5. This reduces clicks and mental math.

Use multiple counters strategically

Instead of one counter for everything, use separate counters for categories you want to track independently. You can always see the total at the bottom, but you'll also have the breakdown.

Reset thoughtfully

The reset button zeros the count instantly. Before clicking it, make sure you've noted or recorded any count you need to keep. There's no undo for reset.

Privacy-first design

This tool is built with privacy as a core principle. Your counts are stored locally on your device using browser storage—nothing is ever sent to any server. There's no tracking, no analytics, no cookies, and no account required.

Your data stays on your device. We can't see it, we can't access it, and we don't want to. When you clear your browser data or use private/incognito mode, your saved counts will be lost. Otherwise, they persist indefinitely on your device.

Technical details

The counter uses React state management with browser localStorage for persistence. Counts update instantly with no network latency. The interface uses tabular number formatting to prevent layout shifts as digits change.

Works in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Mobile browsers are fully supported—the large touch targets are designed for easy tapping on touchscreens.
