Finding wall studs

Wall studs are typically spaced at regular intervals, making them predictable to locate once you find the first one.

Standard stud spacing

16" on centerLoad-bearing walls, exterior walls
24" on centerInterior non-load-bearing walls

How to find the first stud

  1. Use a stud finder - Electronic or magnetic
  2. Knock on the wall - Solid sound indicates a stud
  3. Look for clues:
    • Electrical outlets are typically mounted on studs
    • Light switches are mounted on studs
    • Nail heads in baseboards mark stud locations

Measuring from corners

In most construction:

  • First stud is at the corner (0")
  • Or first stud is 16" from corner
  • Subsequent studs every 16" or 24"

Tips for hanging items

Light items (under 10 lbs)

  • Drywall anchors work fine
  • No need to find studs

Medium items (10-25 lbs)

  • Toggle bolts or heavy-duty anchors
  • Stud preferred but not required

Heavy items (over 25 lbs)

  • Always mount into studs
  • Use appropriate screws (not nails)
  • Consider two studs for large items
